The Message of the Candle
A light-giving candle has many characteristics you and I should seek to
have. Let us think for awhile about some of these good qualities:
1. The candle is receptive -- it accepts the light that is given to it. It permits itself
to be molded and used.
2. In order for the candle to fulfill its purpose for existing, it sacrifices itself.
3. It quietly performs its duty, ready to serve all people. It shines just as faithfully
on the poor man's table as at a king's banquet. It burns on the alter of the cathedral or
on the table of a tiny mission house. It seeks to give forth light in darkness.
4. It enters into peoples moods. At a birthday party it is gay and jolly. At a dinner
party, it enters into the fellowship of friends. At church, it inspires worship. At the
funeral, it comforts the sorrowing.
5. The candle is kind and forbearing -- it puts the best construction on all things about
it. It covers up the blemishes, makes the plain look beautiful, the old look young, the
tired appear relaxed. It cast a warm glow on everything near it.
6. The candle has self-control and dignity -- unless disturbed, it burns at a steady
pace.
